Native Hibiscus Blooming
This Hibiscus coccineus or, Scarlet rosemallow, is in bloom! This hibiscus plant is native to the coastal plain from Virginia to Louisiana and can be found in marshes, ditches, or other wet areas. It has a large red (or white) bloom and a distinctive leaf shape. They grow to be about 6 to 8 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. It seems the bees and butterflies enjoy the plant as much as I do.
Scarlet rosemallow is a part of the “Malvaceae” or “Mallow” family of plants. Okra, cotton, cacao, and hollyhock are other well known members of this family.
If you are looking for that tropical feel and some color in your garden, the Scarlet rosemallow is perfect! Since it is a native plant, this hibiscus is hardy enough to survive if New Orleans freezes in the winter. It does die back in the winter, but will come back with vigor every year.
